Fun ride, great sights

It was so cool to drive a Segway through El Retiro Park. The Cecilio Rodríguez Gardens were gorgeous! I loved seeing all the peacocks walking around. However, the Palacio de Cristal was my favorite stop! It looked like it was floating among the trees. The tour was informative, and I learned a lot about the park's history, like how it was once a royal hunting ground. If you’re in Madrid, I’d recommend going on this tour!

A fun way to explore

The Segway tour was the perfect way to see El Retiro Park in a short amount of time. We went after visiting the Royal Palace, so we didn’t have a lot of daylight left. The Segway was comfortable, and the tour was just the right length. The Estanque Lake was especially beautiful. All in all, it was an easy way to cover a lot of ground without feeling rushed. Highly recommend it for those with limited time!

Madrid Segway Tour

GO ON A SEGWAY ADVENTURE

Your Segway Tour Madrid starts with a quick training session. This will help you get used to the Segway and feel safer while driving. Once you're ready, you’ll set off on a ride through El Retiro Park. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Originally created as a royal retreat by King Philip IV in 1630, it was opened to the public in the late 19th century. As you ride through, your guide will explain the park's design and its role in Madrid's culture.

EXPLORE HISTORIC MONUMENTS

Start your visit at the Antigua Casa de Fieras (Old House of Beasts). This was Madrid’s first zoo, built in 1774 when Charles III was king. It later transformed into a cultural venue, hosting exhibitions and events. Next, you’ll ride through the Cecilio Rodríguez Garden. It’s named after the Spanish architect who designed it in the 1920s. This peaceful garden is known for its peacock population walking around freely. Next, you’ll visit the Fountain of the Fallen Angel (Fuente del Angel Caido). This fascinating sculpture was made in 1877. At 666 meters above sea level, it symbolizes Lucifer's fall, a reference to Milton’s Paradise Lost. Moving forward, you'll reach La Rosaleda. It is a rose garden dating back to 1915, which is home to over 4,000 rose bushes, blooming in the spring months.

RELAX AND ENJOY THE BEAUTY

Next, you’ll visit the stunning Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace), completed in 1887. Originally built for the Philippine Exposition, it showcased exotic plants from the Philippines. This made it a symbol of Spain's global connections during the colonial era. As you pass by the Estanque del Retiro (Grand Pond), you’ll see the Monumento Alfonso XII. It is a magnificent monument dedicated to King Alfonso XII. The monument was completed in 1922 and inaugurated by his son, Alfonso XIII, offering stunning views of the water. Your final stop will be the Parterre Garden, a French-style garden from the 18th century. Here, you’ll find El Ahuehuete, the oldest tree in Madrid, at nearly 400 years old. As the Madrid Segway tour comes to an end, you’ll return to the starting point, taking in final views of the park’s scenery.

The secret Zoo of El Retiro

Long before it became a stop on the Segway Tour Madrid, El Retiro Park was home to Madrid’s first zoo. Known as the Antigua Casa de Fieras (Old Beast House), it opened in 1774 during the reign of Charles III. Located right inside the park, the zoo once housed lions, tigers, monkeys, and elephants. At the time, it was a symbol of Spain’s curiosity about the world and its colonies. Today, the building is used for cultural exhibits, but it still stands as a reminder of the park’s unusual past.
